OBITUARIES

Suzanne Claire (Fortier) Allyn

Suzanne Claire (Fortier) Allyn, age 71, Artist, Teacher, Wife, Mother and Grandmother, passed away unexpectedly at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, MI on Wednesday, December 13, 2006.  Her heart just wasn’t big enough to hold all the love she had for her family and all her friends.

She was born on February 16, 1935 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to the late Robert and Dorothy (Brown) Fortier.  Sue attended South High School, Grand Rapids Junior College and the University of Michigan.  She loved to teach children and was the owner of Grace Church Pre-School for 30+ years, retiring in May of 1999.  After retirement Suzanne and her husband Larry moved permanently to beautiful Grand Marais, MI, in the Upper Peninsula, where they had a summer home.  Here, she was actively involved in the community.  In Grand Marais, she flourished as an artist/officer of The Marketplace (Grand Marais Cottage Industries).  Sue also devoted much of her time to the Grand Marias Historical Society as Secretary and volunteer, the Pickle Barrel restoration project, the Grand Marais Women’s Club and, more recently obtained the Grand Marais Certified Emergency Response Team certification.  She also helped organize many workshops and helped bring special entertainers to Grand Marais for the community to enjoy.  Sue enjoyed the “Nature in Abundance” and peacefulness of the Upper Peninsula and captured it in her many paintings, drawings, glasswork, woodwork and other art forms.  Sue was always the happiest when spending time with her beloved grandchildren.

Sue was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids and was a member of the Grace Church Holy Rollers Investment Club.  Sue was also a member of the Universal Unitarian Church in Grand Marais.  She was an officer of the Grand Rapids Chapter of Chi Omega Alumnae (U of M) and a member of the Grand Rapids Federation of the University of Michigan Alumnae Clubs.

Suzanne will be greatly missed by Larry, the love of her life and husband of over 49 years,  children Renee and Paul Bogdan of Germantown, MD, Wendy Allyn of Grand Rapids, Stuart and Lynda Allyn, of Grand Rapids, and grandchildren, Nicole and Christopher Bogdan and Lauren, Lindsay and Jonathan Allyn.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Grand Marais Cottage Industries Scholarship Fund c/o The Marketplace, P.O. Box 475, Grand Marais, MI 49839.

A memorial service will be held on January 13, 2007 at 11:am
